Men's Perms in Austin, TX
Modern texture. Natural movement. A haircut that works with it.
Not everyone is born with the texture they want.
Some people have straight hair that falls flat. Others want more movement, fuller-looking hair, or curls without spending every morning creating them with products and hot tools. That's where a perm can make sense.
I approach perms the same way I approach haircuts: by looking at the individual, not following a formula. Your length, density, existing shape, natural texture, and daily routine all decide what kind of perm will work for you.
I'm not interested in giving everyone the same curls. I want the finished result to make sense for your hair and how you actually wear it.
The Basics
What Is a Modern Men's Perm?
A perm is a chemical service that changes the hair's internal structure to create waves or curls.
The technique has been around for decades, but what people ask for today is usually very different from the tight, uniform curls associated with traditional perms. A modern men's perm can be customized for softer waves, added volume, defined curls, or natural-looking movement.
The result depends on rod size, wrapping technique, section placement, hair length, and the condition of your hair. A good perm is planned alongside your haircut, not treated as a separate decision.
Options
What Kind of Perm Should You Get?
Loose Wave Perm
Movement without a highly defined curl. A good direction for clients who want their hair to look less flat or prefer a relaxed, textured style.
Curly Perm
For noticeable curls with more definition and shape. The finished pattern depends on your length, condition, rod selection, and wrapping technique.
Textured Crop Perm
A short hair perm adds movement and texture through the top of a cropped style, and pairs well with a taper or shorter sides.
You need enough length in the permed areas to hold the pattern.
Mullet or Shag Perm
Layered cuts like shags and mullets take wave and curl well. The key is a pattern that complements the layers instead of fighting the haircut.
Partial Perm
Sometimes you only need texture in one area. A partial perm adds volume or curl to selected sections without treating the whole head.
Common Question
How Long Does Your Hair Need to Be?
This is one of the most common questions I hear, and there isn't one universal minimum.
The length you need depends on the curl pattern you want, the rod size it takes, and whether your hair can be wrapped properly. Shorter hair may suit tighter patterns. Longer hair generally gives you more options for softer waves and movement.
If you're not sure you have enough length, text me a few clear photos for a free pre-screen. Photos help, but they don't replace an in-person consultation, which is required before a first-time perm.
If your hair isn't long enough for the result you're after, I'll tell you. Sometimes the best decision is to grow it a little longer instead of rushing into a service that won't give you what you want.
Straight Answers
What to Know Before You Commit
Will a perm look natural?
It can, but that comes down to planning and technique. A natural-looking perm isn't necessarily the loosest possible curl. It's a pattern that makes sense for your haircut, proportions, density, and personal style.
Some clients want subtle movement that looks almost effortless. Others want their curls to be the main feature. Neither is right or wrong. The consultation is where we figure out what's realistic and what will look best on you.
Can a perm damage your hair?
A perm is a chemical service, and chemical services affect the structure of your hair. There's no benefit in pretending otherwise.
Hair that's heavily lightened, compromised, or overprocessed may not be suitable. Previous color, bleach, relaxers, and other chemical treatments all matter. I'll evaluate your hair's condition and history first, and if I don't believe it can safely handle the process, I won't perform it.
How long does a perm last?
Permed hair keeps its altered texture until that hair grows out or is cut off, though the curls can loosen or change over time. How long your style looks the way you want depends on length, curl pattern, growth, condition, and maintenance. Shorter styles usually need more frequent haircuts to keep their shape as new growth comes in.
Is a perm low maintenance?
A perm reduces the effort it takes to create texture, but it doesn't eliminate styling. You'll still need the right shampoo, conditioner, and styling products, plus a routine that supports your curl pattern. Some clients only need a little curl cream. Others need more intentional styling. Either way, I'll show you how to recreate the look at home.

First Visit
What Happens During a Perm Consultation?
Before I schedule a chemical service, I want to understand your hair and what you're hoping to achieve. We'll go over:
- Your current haircut and length
- Your natural texture and density
- Previous color, bleach, or chemical treatments
- The difference between waves, volume, and defined curls
- Inspiration photos and realistic outcomes
- Maintenance and daily styling
- Pricing and appointment timing
Please arrive with clean, dry hair styled the way you normally wear it, and bring a few inspiration photos if you have them. You don't need to know the technical name for the curl you want. Figuring that out is part of the consultation.

Perm or Smoothing Treatment?
These services solve opposite problems.
A perm changes the hair's structure to create waves or curls. It's for someone who wants more texture, movement, or curl.
A smoothing treatment reduces frizz, softens texture, and improves manageability, and can reduce unwanted curl or volume.
If you want more curl, we're talking about a perm. If you're fighting frizz, extra volume, or hair that won't behave in humidity, smoothing is probably the better conversation. Not every client needs a chemical service, and I'll help you decide.

Why Get Your Perm at Cuts By Lulu?
I've been doing hair professionally since 2008, and one of the biggest things I've learned is that texture and shape have to work together. You can have a technically good perm and still end up with a hairstyle that doesn't make sense if the haircut isn't designed around it.
That's why I look at the whole picture: how your hair falls, where it needs volume, how the curls will sit in your haircut, and how much styling effort you're realistically willing to put in.
Cuts By Lulu is a private, one-chair studio on South Congress. You work directly with me from the consultation through the finished service. No rotating stylists, no assembly-line appointments, and no guessing who's doing your hair.

FAQ
Men's Perm Questions
Can men with straight hair get a perm?
Yes. Straight hair can be a good candidate when it has enough length and is in good condition. The curl pattern you want and your chemical history decide the approach.
Is a haircut included with my perm?
Medium Hair Perms and Long Hair Perms include a shaping haircut. Short Hair Perms and Partial Perms don't include a haircut. If your shape needs work before a short perm, I'll tell you at your consultation and we'll plan for it.
Can I get a perm if my hair is bleached or colored?
It depends on your hair's condition and what chemicals have been used. Some chemically treated hair isn't suitable for another chemical service. An in-person assessment is required.
Can a perm make thin hair look fuller?
A perm can create the appearance of more body and volume. It doesn't increase the number of hairs or treat hair loss.
Will my perm look like my inspiration photo?
Photos help me understand your goal, but results depend on your own hair. I'll explain what's realistically achievable before we start.
Can I wash my hair right after a perm?
Aftercare depends on the product and process used for your hair. I'll give you specific instructions before you leave.
How much does a men's perm cost at Cuts By Lulu?
Short Hair Perms start at $195, Medium Hair Perms at $295, Long Hair Perms at $425, and Partial Perms at $150. First-time clients need a $25 consultation, which is credited toward a perm booked and completed within 30 days. Consultation fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable.
Do you only offer perms for men?
No. All clients are welcome. Services are customized to your hair's length, texture, condition, and the result you want.
