What Busy Actually Looks Like (From My Side of the Mirror)

From the outside, a busy day behind the chair probably looks like a packed schedule and nonstop movement.

From my side of the mirror, busy starts long before the first client walks in.

I learned that years ago working in the food service industry. Before every shift, we’d prep for the night we wanted to have — not the night we hoped for. Extra fruit cut, condiments stocked, everything ready so if the rush came, no one was scrambling. And if it didn’t? You were still prepared for the next shift.

That mindset never left me.

Now, whether my book looks full or light, I start each day the same way: prepared for the day I want to have. Towels stocked. Tools clean. Environment set. Mentally present. When you work in a service-based industry, anticipation is everything. You prepare for the experience before the client even arrives.

As the city gets busier — whether it’s spring, events, or just a stretch of beautiful Austin weather — that preparation becomes even more important. People are moving faster. Schedules tighten. Energy picks up. The best thing I can do for my clients is create a space where none of that feels rushed once they sit down.

A lot of what keeps a studio calm is invisible.

The lighting. The scent in the air. The temperature of the room. What’s playing on the screen or in the background.

I think about those things from a client’s perspective. If there’s no big game on, I might put on a quiet fireplace scene. I’ll use essential oils that aren’t the typical lavender everyone expects. I keep refreshments on hand that feel a little more thoughtful than the usual. None of it is accidental. It’s all part of anticipating what will make someone feel comfortable the moment they walk in.

Because once a stylist starts rushing, everything shifts.

When someone behind the chair is flustered or distracted, it’s easy to miss what the client actually needs. Most people already feel a little self-conscious when they sit down. They don’t always have the words to describe what they want. That’s where our focus matters most — reading body language, listening for key phrases, noticing what others might overlook.

The devil is in the details.

And details are the first thing to go when someone is rushing.

Early in my career I felt pressure to constantly fill the space with conversation, to be witty, to keep the energy up. Over time I realized that staying fully present with the haircut itself always leads to a better result. Conversation is great, but focus is what makes a haircut grow out well and feel effortless for the client long after they leave.

A full day in my studio, when it’s running well, has a rhythm to it.

Each appointment gets my full attention.

Each transition gets a reset.

No one is rushed in or out, but no one is kept waiting either.

I’ve learned that you don’t need hours to deliver a great result — you need clarity, consistency, and presence. When your rhythm is steady, clients feel it. They walk in knowing they’re going to be taken care of without chaos or confusion.

Austin has a way of coming alive when the weather shifts and the days get longer. After a heavy rain or a stretch of beautiful evenings, the whole city feels lighter. People are out more. Energy is high. It’s one of the things that makes this place special.

Inside my studio, I try to mirror that same feeling — welcoming, calm, and unhurried. I don’t design the space around myself. I design it around how I want someone to feel when they walk in: comfortable, respected, and at ease knowing they’re in good hands.

When everything in the city speeds up, I try to stay grounded.

Step outside. Get fresh air. Stay connected to a life outside of work.

That balance is what allows me to show up fully for the people who sit in my chair.

At the end of the day, this work is about more than just getting through a schedule. It’s about consistency. Care. Attention to detail. Every person who sits down gets the same level of focus, regardless of who they are or what service they’re getting.

Life’s too short to walk around with a haircut that doesn’t feel right.

And for me, busy has never been about moving faster — it’s about staying present enough to get the details right every single time.
